Saturday's "OMW" and a winner!

Words to self:
"You gotta be careful if you don't know where you are going,
because you might not get there." Yogi Beara

There are a bazillion websites, books and life coaches
with lots and lots of ideas on how to set goals.
But, a couple of things they have in common are:
1) be specific
           2) don't set too many at once
              3) start easy/small and work up
                  4) break it down...monthly, daily..

Sometimes, I don't have a good success rate because I
set too many goals.  Sometimes they are too difficult for me achieve
in a specific amount of time.  And, sometimes,  I am just too
 vague with what my goal really is.
 I can say...
 I want to make more healthy choices this year.
It's too vague.  Instead, it would be a better idea to
... pick one particular thing (i.e., sugar or fried food)
 Then, I set a goal to try to NOT eat...say chocolate or
french fries for a month.  At the end of the month, I reevaluate.
Depending on my success rate...I can set new goals - up or down.
Maybe I want to include something in my foods that I'm
not doing now.  I might say I'm going to eat more fruit.  Good goal...
but, still a bit vague.  I need to set the specific goal - I will eat
a piece of fruit at each meal...for at least one month.  Or, I
could say...I will include 3 pieces of fruit in each day.

Trying hard to succeed is important...but, success is a
great motivator to keep trying.  We can't be
so hard on our selves that we want to quit trying.  We
don't want to set goals so far out of reach - at this time,
that we set ourselves up for failure.

Think about child learning to walk.

We wouldn't take them on a hiking trail and
expect them to walk the whole way all by
themselves.  But...someday they WILL be
able to do it...if we keep taking them on hikes
and letting them do more each time. =)

I found a couple of links that have a few simple ideas for
setting goals.  There may be others that you find helpful.
Click on the titles to go "there'.

So, what do YOU think? Would you want to
try setting one specific goal?  And, come back
next Saturday to let us know what YOU learned
and how YOU did?
 We can all learn from each other - if we are
willing to share our comments.  =)

~~~ Ruby's Report ~~~
Treadmill  - I kept my goal this week...6 days.  Now, it's 2 weeks that
                  I've done the 6 days.  I'm hoping to do 2 more weeks of
                  6 days (not counting time or distance).  Then, I will try to
                  set a goal for distance - on top of the 6 days per week.
Food  -  I was a lot better at drinking more water.  I used a 12 oz cup with
              lid and straw.  I am trying to do at least 4 of these every day.  I've
              been falling short of this.  So, my new goal is 3 - 12 oz for 7 days.
              I'll have to see if I can be successful with this new goal.  I watched
              what I ate after about 6pm.  And, I worked on using some form
              of distraction (like sewing) when I felt I was eating for comfort or
              because of boredom (a great tip from a comment).
Weight  -  I'm down 2.2lbs....I am so happy.  This is one of my best "downs"
                for quite some time.  Now...to at least maintain it for next week. I
                would like to go down more...but, I will be happy if I maintain for
                one week.  =)
Congratulations. It sounds like you had a great week. I managed to drink 64 ozs. of water everyday. I also exercised 5 days at Curves this week. I planned on going today, but they are closed due to snow.
I'm just trying to drink more water. If only it tasted like coffee (with cream and honey) or a really good wine... No, it's just like water. I'm doing a little better - definately baby steps. Thanks for encouraging me.
I like the idea of setting one goal and then sharing it. Congrats to Becky on the win and thank you for hosting. For Joy - if you put a twist of a fresh lemon or lime with the wedge in your water it not only tastes better but the enzymes in them help to burn fat.
Woot! Thanks for the podometer. I'm excited to get it. My specific goal this week is to get on the elliptical 5 days in a row and to eat less carbohydrates and more veggies in their place. It's cold and I want carbs most when the weather is like this so I have to challenge myself to exercise more and find comfort in veggies instead of carbs.
Great info on goal setting. It is so true that if you don't know where you are going you don't get anywhere! I have been drinking my glass of water when I get up but the other day I had a need to eat more than usual. I don't mind this as long as I can keep it to only one day every now and then. I didn't lose any this week but I didn't gain either. Well done on your good loss :)
My goals for the week - 30 minutes of stretching exercises every day, and at least 48 ounces of water per day!
Wow. That is great. I am trying to drink more water also. I really am not in love with water but the nutritionist said decaf tea, herbal tea and water are the drinks of choice for a healthy lifestyle.
Ok, I can handle one goal for this week. Great idea. Now I just have to think what. Can't give up sugar. I am usually good about that anyway...BUT...I am expecting my family to give me a birthday cake this weekend. Gotta have some of that :)
This week I am hoping to get back to healthy eating again with portion control....I have not been good about that and the weight is going back up especially since I haven't been able to do much with my bad foot. I'll be making an app't with the Dr on Monday. I thought ice and heat and pain pills may help but it hasn't...and that is NOT GOOD!! I must drink more water too!! Hopefully I will be able to get on the treadmill real soon and back to the gym!!
