a closed window

I know there are so many other more important things happening in the world.   There are definitely more tragedies...than in my small corner of the world where the internet was down for almost 3 full days.

And, I  do have lots of other things I can do when the internet goes down.

I feel a bit lost without the ability to shop for look up stuff on the internet!

AND...

for me, the internet is kind of  a "window" to the world.  When the internet is down
...it's like a BIG "window" is closed.

It's quite interesting how much I take the internet for granted.  I've thought many times that I could
go without a clothes dryer, a dishwasher, a microwave and quite a few other things before I would want to give up access to internet and my laptop.  =)

What about you?  How big of a roll does the internet play in your life?  What are your thoughts, when the internet goes down either at home or at work?

As Martin Luther King day comes to a close, I've been reminded of how hurtful prejudice can be.  I need to make even stronger efforts to be aware of prejudices in my own thinking.  I like to think of this day as a day to remember how there are many diverse people in the world with many different religions and customs.  They might think differently than me, I might not agree with the way they choose to live.  But, I need to be careful not to think my way is the *better* way for all.  =)

Pretty sure I would go crazy if my internet disappeared.

Isn't amazing how cut off we feel when we can't get access to the internet? Glad to hear you are back up and running.

I actually turn the thing off some days, so I don't think a few days would disturb me.

It used to be that I barely went on the internet and then 1.5 years ago I got really sick, people were afraid to visit me so the internet became my outside link to the world..and its when I met YOU! When I was on bedrest the internet and my kindle were the only items that would keep me laying down. As I came into Motherhood I had only a few minutes a day it felt to check out anything and then we transitioned into the world of Smartphones (where my phone is much, much smarter than me!) If someone sends me a link in an email I can click and go to their blog, right from my comfty position as a chair or pillow for my baby girl! Even so, I can walk away from the internet still for a couple of days, for my husband it would be like an arm was cut off!

I do enjoy the internet for shopping, checking the TV program, checking the weather, looking up an actor in a show I am watching, adding things to my pinterest boards, downloading designs etc. But I also read novels almost as much so if the computer is not working I just read and sew and watch TV. Though lately we have been streaming ABC shows through the ipad onto the TV with our new Apple TV box so even the TV is from the internet!

I've lived without a microwave for more than 6 months but I hate it when the internet goes down for more than a few hours.

Oy, I feel your pain. I get cranky beyond reason when my connection is merely slow.

Don't you feel shut off from the whole world when it is down? Glad it is back.

My hubby and I have gotten to the point where we won't book at a hotel that doesn't have wi-fi; and when asked what I would grab first in case of a fire, I replied, "my computer!" In case of a flood, it would be my long arm, though...... more time!!

Love that squirrel pic!!!

I feel your pain. We were without internet service and our landline telephone for 7.5 weeks after hurricane Sandy. Luckily that was only problem, but it was really hard.

I am very dependent on Google so I guess if the internet was down, I'd be calling all my friends to know how to do something or how to cook something.

When I go to PA, typically I don't have internet and I love the break....ahhhh :)

Actually, I'd put the internet at the top of the list of things I could do without. I'd have a lot more time for really useful things. =) I always feel relieved when it goes down, since I don't have the self-control to just turn it off. =P

I'm a moderator on 5 different freecycle sites. I check my email several times a day to see if I need to approve any posts. It drives me nuts when the internet goes down. I will say that I don't use my phone to access the internet (yet).

I know I'd miss internet, I do not want to go back to the days w/o. I do not have a smart phone, but I will say my cell phone has gotten me out of many anxious moments, eve if just to call my sweetie when I'm lost on one of CA's freeways, and I do not feel so alone, you know what I mean?

Sad to say I am a "connected" woman. Our internet was out for two weeks a few years back and spouse and I wandered aimlessly. About the time we adjusted and were remembering how to get along without it, we got the internet back so never really got back in the swing of "olden days". It is amazing how often we depend on the computer throughout each day to answer questions, entertain and plan everything from meals to organizing our calendars. I find cyberspace a good place to live.

Annie - I grew up without a computer - but I am so addicted now - I don't know what I would do!!! I love my computer and my friends in it! Glad yours is back to working! Even if you don't need it and have lots to do - it's nice to know it's there!!!

When my internet connection goes down I panic.
Literally ... I could not live without it. I will do without EVERYTHING else if I had to... but not the internet.

Like you ... it's my window to everything. Most of my 'friends' are via the internet.

That is a bit sad. But... it is what it is.

I have to admit... I would DIE without diet coke, so maybe that is slightly higher in importance than the internet? lol
